Are credit report errors common?

Unfortunately, credit report errors are common. In fact, as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recently stated, credit report problems are now the most complained about consumer issue.

Below are some statistics from a 2012 study and 2015 study by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and a 2017 study by the CFPB:

  • In one study, "[o]ne in four consumers identified errors on their credit reports that might affect their credit scores."
  • Credit reporting agencies failed to fix errors for nearly 70 percent of consumers who disputed inaccuracies in one study.
  • 76% of consumer complaints about credit reporting concern incorrect information on credit reports.

What are common credit report errors?

Credit report errors happen when credit reporting agencies (CRAs) make mistakes in collecting consumer data or when banks and lenders make mistakes in reporting information to CRAs. Errors also can happen when investigations are conducted improperly or your identity is stolen.

Common credit report errors include:

  • Mixed or Merged Files: When your credit report contains another person's information.
  • Out-Dated Information: When your credit report contains adverse information that's over 7 years.
  • Recording Mistakes: When wrong information is recorded or reported about you (clerical errors and coding mistakes are common causes).
  • Failing to Report Updated Information: Current information must be reported. A common error is failing to update a discharged debt.

Can credit report errors harm me?

Credit report errors can have harmful consequences. Common problems caused by credit report inaccuracies include:

  • Denial of credit or financing for a home, car, credit card, or other loan.
  • Getting less favorable loan terms, meaning you pay higher interest and/or additional fees.
  • Denial of employment or security clearances.
  • Denial of housing or having to pay more for a lease.
